What is a Root Canal?

What Causes Root Canal Problems?

If left untreated, the tissues around the root of your tooth can become infected. Infection can cause an abscess around your tooth roots, inside your tooth, in your gum tissue, or your jawbone. An infection can put you at risk of losing your tooth because the bacteria can attack your jawbone and tooth-supporting tissues, causing your tooth to loosen.

Do I Need a Root Canal?

Are you experiencing a toothache? You may benefit from a root canal. The need for a root canal can present in a variety of symptoms, such as:

Severe pain when chewing or biting
Swelling in the face or jaw due to infection
Abscessed teeth or gums
Prolonged sensitivity to temperature or pressure
Swollen, puffy, or tender gums
Drainage

Darkening of the gums or teeth

If you experience more or more of these symptoms, call or visit Towne Lake Dentistry right away.

What Can I Expect During a Root Canal?

A root canal procedure typically takes two office visits to complete. During your initial visit, our dentist will perform an examination and take X-rays to evaluate the condition of your tooth. Dr. Patterson will determine the best course of action to treat your symptoms and schedule your root canal procedure as soon as possible to provide relief.

During your procedure, Dr. Patterson will:

  • Administer a local anesthetic to numb your tooth and reduce discomfort.
  • Remove the nerve and infected material from inside your tooth.
  • Clean the pulp chamber and each tooth root.
  • Fill the root canals with a rubber-like material to seal them and prevent future infection.
  • Place a temporary filling or crown on your tooth to protect it. Once a permanent crown is completed, our dentist will install the crown to fully restore your tooth.

Is a Root Canal Painful?

No, a root canal is a relatively pain-free procedure. Dr. Patterson will administer a local anesthetic to numb your mouth and make you as comfortable as possible. Our team also offers dental sedation options to help you relax throughout your treatment. Be sure to ask how you can benefit from sedation during your next appointment.
